Deerhound Club Southern Limited Show 2015 Critique

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge. It was a wonderful venue with great facilities and the weather was perfect, pleasantly warm with blue skies and sunshine. Thanks to my steward and all of the show staff for running the day so smoothly and to all of the exhibitors for entering their hounds and accepting my decisions so sportingly. I thoroughly enjoyed my day judging this lovely show.

Puppy Dog  (4 .1)
1st Peach's Kilbourne Max
A 7 month old baby with so much to like about him, nicely grown and well balanced with no exaggerations, has a good head shape with dark eye and well placed ears, neck is strong and leads into well laid shoulder, good depth of chest, correct topline, nice tail set and carriage. Feet are neat and well knuckled. Moved steadily, covering the ground well and holding his topline. Pleased to award him  BPIS.
2nd Helps' Beardswood Torran
Another nice youngster who has a pleasing head with dark eyes, correct, balanced angulation, nice length of body with good depth of chest, has a crisp coat, correct tail set and moved well for his age. Not quite as positive on the move as the 1st place winner.
3rd Trotman& Dockbee's Stainlonan Pageant of Penherald

Junior Dog  (1)
1st Peach's Kilbourne Tyne.
16 month old, a quality young male , well presented in lovely condition with super coat, has a masculine head with dark eyes, balanced angulation, good length with correct top line and nice drooping quarters, good, straight legs and low hocks. Moved very well with a long, low stride, keeping his topline, a very promising young hound.

Under Graduate Dog  (3)
1st Barter & Christian's Ehlaradawn Rune
At 2 years old this dog still has to mature and fill out but he's a super dog for type and full of quality. Played his handler up and didn't show his best but I couldn't deny his 1st place. Super head with a melting expression,  lovely dark eyes and small, well set ears  which he held correctly. Well laid shoulder, deep chest, ribs well back, good bend of stifle and nice low hocks. Did enough on the move but I'm sure could do so much better. A dog I'll watch with interest.
2nd Girling's Pyefleet Timothy
A workman like dog with super muscle tone and correct coat, preferred head of winner but this hound has a good strong neck, nice topline, lovely straight, strong legs with good bone. Moved soundly, covering the ground easily. One that looks fit for function.

Post Graduate Dog  (3)
1st Pink's Greyhawks Romanie Drom
A masculine 2 year old dog in lovely muscular condition and in good coat of correct length and texture. Handsome head with dark eye and neatly folded, well placed ears, balanced angulation, good length of body and depth of chest , nice bend of stifle and strong, low hocks. This hound has great potential once he stops playing his handler up in the ring. Moved well once settled.
2nd Wragg's Fritzens Drum to Neroche (IMP)
A very immature dog with finer bone than winner but such a lovely type, has a really gentle expression with nice, dark eye and neat well placed ears. Deep enough in chest but needs to broaden a little. He just needs time to get to his best. Moved soundly with a light, easy gait.
3rd Lucas& Dargonne's Packway Lonesome Dove

Open Dog  (7.2)
1st Faircloth's Beardswood Ripley for Calbraidh
A 3 year old mature hound of good size and bone with a pale silver grey coat of good texture, great depth and breadth throughout with good angulation, low set strong hocks and tidy well knuckled feet. Correct tail set and carriage. Moved very soundly, covering the ground with ease, very straight and true coming and going away, lovely long, low strides in profile. One of the soundest movers of the day and nicely presented. A worthy winner , Best Dog
2nd  Lucas& Dargonne's Commanche Moon
Another nice strong male with a pale gray coat, he's maturing nicely, really pleasing head with a lovely dark eye and small, correctly shaped ears, strong neck, good depth of chest and ribs well back with balanced angulation throughout. Moved sound and true. A similar type to the winner, I'm sure they will change places in the future but just preferred the movement of the winner on the day, very pleased to award him Reserve Best Dog
3rd Schaanning-Ling's Beardswood Quiver

Veteran Dog (1)
1st Spring-Arnold's Sorisdale Macmanus
Rising 8 years, a medium size dog with a dense, pale coat. He has a soft, gentle expression and the very best of ears.Lovely feet which are still tight and well knuckled. Nice bend of stifle and low hocks. Tail well set and carried. Moved out steadily .

Puppy Bitch( 8.1)
This was my favorite class of the day, 7 quality puppy girls who will no doubt chance places many times in the future, I was splitting hairs between my 1st and 2nd place winners today. Some very beautiful pups who surely have a bright future.
1st Taylor & Peach's Kilbourne Millefleur to Talorpeche
Litter sister to my puppy dog winner so very similar in type. A well grown girl with a harsh, dark coat shown in lovely condition and nicely handled. She has a sweet expression with dark eye, strong neck leading to good lay back of shoulder , nice length of body, good  bone, tight feet, plenty of length from hip to hock. Behaved herself perfectly for one so young and moved around the ring with confidence covering the ground well with long, low strides. BPB
2nd Help's Beardswood Taisie
A super quality, well grown puppy at her first show today and she behaved beautifully. Another pup with a dark, crisp coat, plenty of bone and substance with good angles fore and aft. Has everything she needs to make a beautiful deerhound. Loved her head, expression and little well set ears. She looked sound and strong on the move once settled. I found it very hard to choose between these two pups but the first place winner had a bit more maturity and confidence today. A pup I'll watch with interest.
3rd Wragg's Neroche Juno

Junior Bitch (1)
1st Peach/Talors 's Kilbourne Tess to Taylorpeche .
A quality 16 month old bitch of lovely type presented in hard condition with a crisp, good quality coat. Really feminine head with neat well set ears which she held correctly, good strong neck  into nice shoulder placement, has length and correct topline Straight legs and tight, well knuckled feet. Everything where it should be for her age, just need more width all through which should come with maturity. Effortless movement with long, easy strides. A promising youngster.

Special Beginner's Bitch(1)
Stratford's Regalflight Fable (TAF)
A mature bitch of nice quality who was really playing her novice handler up today but moved out well once she put her mind to it and settled down. A good size girl with a super harsh coat. Good head with a dark eye and gentle expression, she has a deep chest, correct topline and nice low set hocks, feet were tight and well knuckled. With a bit more practice and training I'm sure she'll come good. Nicely presented and in good condition.

Special Yearling Bitch (2)
1st Stainlonan Rend of Penherald
11 month old puppy who was really not making it easy for her handler today, quite raw at present but shows promise, she has a feminine head with dark eye, a good topline and nice length from hip to hock. Moved quite well once settled. She just needs lots of time and patience.
2nd Spring-Arnold's Chuillin Bellina
Another youngster who was a handful for her handler today, a workman like bitch, she acts like she'd much rather be out working on the hill than in a show-ring. Moved with great enthusiasm (maybe  a bit too much) but has the very best feet and ears. A credit to the owner for her great muscle tone and condition.

Under Graduate Bitch (4)
1st Peach's Kilbourne Zoe
22 month old rangy bitch of good size and bone standing over a lot of ground. Coat in good condition and harsh to the touch. She has a feminine head, nice strong neck, shoulders well laid leading to good length in body and a correct topline. Her movement is so correct and sound, easily covers the ground with long, low strides. Very well presented and handled.
2nd Lewis' Luckhurst Olgrin
A smaller, more compact bitch , very pretty head with super ears, small, well folded and correctly set, presented in really lovely muscular condition which showed in her very straight, sound movement.
3rd Stratford's Regalflight Fable (TAF)

 Post Grad Bitch(6.3)
1st Peach's Kilbourne Liberty
A super bitch for type, maturing nicely, well presented in good, hard condition. Liked her feminine head and neat ears. Lovely strong neck into well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm, plenty of depth in chest, good length with correct topline, nice bend of stifle, low hocks and tight feet. A sound, free mover, covered the ground well and moved straight coming and going. Really well handled and presented. Pleased to award her RBB and a well deserved RBIS.
2nd  Hyndsight Reason to Believe
A smaller, more compact bitch but very powerful with lots of substance, not standing over as much ground as the winner but I thought she was a lovely type, good dark coat of correct harsh texture. Very nice front assembly and broad rear quarters. Moves soundly but the winner had a longer length of stride,
3rd William's Greyflax Brown Eyed Girl

Open Bitch (11.6)
1st Barter's Ehlaradawn Tilia at Kilbourne
Just the type I was looking for, a super quality, good sized bitch with a crisp, harsh jacket nicely presented and handled. She has a feminine head of correct shape, dark eye giving a gentle expression and small, well set ears held properly. Lovely strong neck with a slight arch leading to well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm, nicely angulated rear quarters with excellent bend of stifle. Good depth to  chest , plenty of heart room and nice tuck up,  just the right length with correct topline . A sound, easy mover covered the ground well and kept her topline at all times. I think her best is still yet to come, a really beautiful deerhound. I was very happy to award her Best bitch and BIS
2nd Peach's Kilbourne Unity
Pushed the winner hard, another nice quality bitch of good type, much of the above applies to this girl, pretty head with a strong neck, a good front with well laid shoulder, she has a correct topline and good bend of stifle. Moved very sound and true. I'm sure these two will swap places in the future.
3rd Lucas & Dargonne's Glenmorlich None So Pretty For Packway

Veteran Bitch (4.3)
1st Wilce Quinton's Pendrethan Tamzyn to Kilbourne
At 10 years this old lady looks superb and is a credit to her owner who presented and handled her beautifully. Very feminine and lovely curves in all the right places. She still has great teeth and super tight feet. Moved around the ring steadily, still very sound and carried herself with quiet dignity. A very well deserved Best Veteran in Show
